Oban Adventures

From OBAN ... The CRINAN CANAL to LARGS

This adventure starts at the Oban Town Pontoons and gives you all, the chance to explore  some of the Islands of the West Coast of Scotland on your way to Crinan, where you will enter The Canal. You will then sample the delight of sailing in the glorious Firth of Clyde on your way to Largs.

When you arrive at Oban your Skipper will welcome you on board. You will be shown where you will sleep (your berth) and there will be safety briefings covering lifejackets and safety equipment on board. You will then be on your way.

How far you go on your 1st afternoon will depend on your wishes and what you would like to do.

You might be mooring up in Craignure or you might be spending the night at anchor or on the pontoon berths in Loch Aline. You will either be eating on board or ashore.

On Sunday you will have a lovely sail to Tobermory, a very pretty fishing village that has excellent berthing facilities. There are some good pubs & restaurants in Tobermory.

Monday:-  From Tobermory we will continue on our sail around the Isle of Mull. We will get a chance to view the rather splendid Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa, on down through the Sound of Iona to Tinkers Hole for the night.

On Tuesday we will head back east toward the Garvellachs and then down the Sound of Luing  for some really interesting sailing with some lovely scenery. Keep your eyes open for Porpoises on this part of your adventure.  It’s then into the Crinan canal basin  where you will enter the Canal.

The Crinan Canal was designed & built by Thomas Telford in 1809 and it is a most beautiful short cut to The Firth of Clyde avoiding the long arduous trip around The Mull of Kintyre.

Most of the locks are operated by hand and you will get the chance to operate the gates and see your yacht safely through. The canal is 9 miles long and has 14 locks. You will probably remain in the canal for at least one night before departing the canal at Ardrishaig on Thursday. I think you will really enjoy the Crinan Canal Experience.

It’s a short sail down to the lovely fishing village of Tarbert  After the night in Tarbert we will head through The Kyles of Bute to Largs Yacht Haven

In the morning it’s a quick pack up and debrief before you depart to make your way home by bus or by train.

We hope you will enjoy your adventure.

The Western Isles Cruise from Oban.

In the summer we dedicate our cruise to sailing from Oban to the Western Isles.

It’s all quite magical, with absolutely splendid, rugged scenery.

Oban has a character of its own, busy in the summer and plenty to do.

Oban serves the Island of Mull, Iona Coll & Tiree.

You will have a chance to visit Tobermory on Mull and many of the Islands of on your way to the Outer Hebrides.

From Tobermory we will work our way round to the north of Mull, up around Ardnamurchan, through the Small Isles:-   Muck, Eigg and Rum to Loch Scavaig at the foot of the Cuillins. Skye. There’s a lovely, sheltered anchorage at Canna where we will stay for a night.

Plenty to look out for as we cross over to the outer Hebrides as there is always a good chance to see Humpback Whales, Porpoises, Dolphins, and Killer Whales (Orca)  Also a good chance to spot Eagles soaring in the mountain Crags and Gannets diving for fish !

There is a fine opportunity to visit some of the anchorages in the Outer Hebrides before returning to the east to visit Coll & Tiree and on to The Treshnish isles with their Colonies of Puffins and Fingal’s Cave Staffa.
