Largs Adventures

TRY SAILING
We dedicate our boats to all of you who would like to see if you would like to get more involved in sailing. These 5 day sailing trips take you through from the experience of first stepping foot on your yacht, finding out what is going on, settling down to the routine of being on board and SAILING !

Our Instructors will meet you when you arrive and welcome you on board. We will make sure you are kitted out for sailing and brief you on the various safety aspects of your trip. There will be some familiarisation with ropes, sails, and generally living on a sailing boat at sea.
You will get a chance to explore the Firth of Clyde from Largs Yacht Haven whilst you are finding all about sailing ! This will include visiting lovely Anchorages, Marinas, and Fishing Ports.

You will get to see how the yacht sails and what the crew do to make it all work.
There will be plenty of opportunity to join in as much as you would like. Steer the boat. Set the sails. Drop the anchor. Moor the yacht. All those exciting things that make sailing so attractive.

Our Instructors are fully qualified RYA Commercial Skippers who have special endorsements to teach all about sailing. You will find them very knowledgeable and most experienced.

When you return back to Largs Yacht Haven you will have sailed up to 100nm and will have some long lasting memories of your times on board.

The Arran Cruise.

When you arrive, our skipper will welcome you on board and expand on the activities we expect to be happening. Once we’re on our way you will get a chance to participate in the running of the vessel, handling ropes, steering, and getting to know how a sailboat works. We have planned an Itinerary that we hope you will enjoy. Sailing from Largs, we call our Cruise “The Arran Cruise”. It’s a little over 18nm from Largs to Brodick Bay on Arran. We normally sail at a speed of between 4kts & 6kts which gives you a chance to settle into the “seafaring” routine. Arran is a dramatic island with peaks rising to 2850 ft (873m)

Those who are keen to get the view from the top can take the path to the summit up through the splendid grounds of Brodick Castle. The Castle & Grounds are open to visitors and well worth visiting for those who don’t wish to climb Goat Fell. Our next port of call is Lochranza on the northwestern side of the Island. There is a distillery quite close to the Anchorage that is interesting to visit. We will then sail to the lovely little port of Tarbert where we will stay on the visitor’s pontoons and enjoy a night out in the village. Finally, we will head back to Largs through the Kyles of Bute stopping off at one of the favourite bays en route. Expect to see lots of wildlife on the way. Gannets, Guillemots, Porpoises  & even a chance to see basking sharks or whales. Whales are not often spotted but have appeared in the Kyle of Bute several times in the last few years ! We think you will thoroughly enjoy you cruise and return home with happy memories.

CRINAN CANAL to OBAN

This adventure starts at Largs Yacht Haven and gives you all, the chance to explore  a little bit of the Firth of Clyde on your way to Ardrishaig, where you will enter The Crinan Canal. You will then sample the delight of sailing on the glorious West Coast on your way to Oban.

When you arrive at Largs your Skipper will welcome you on board. You will be shown where you will sleep (your berth) and there will be safety briefings covering lifejackets and safety equipment on board. You will then be on your way.

How far you go on your 1st afternoon will depend on your wishes and what you would like to do.

You might be mooring up in Cumbrae Bay or you might be spending the night at Rothesay or at anchor in the Kyles of Bute. You will either be eating on board or ashore.

On Sunday you will have a lovely sail to Tarbert on Loch Fyne, a very pretty fishing village that has excellent berthing facilities. There are some good pubs & restaurants in Tarbert.

Monday. From Tarbert it is a couple of hours sailing to get to Ardrishaig where you will enter the Crinan Canal. The Crinan Canal was designed & built by Thomas Telford in 1809 and it is a most beautiful short cut to The West Coast avoiding the long arduous trip around The Mull of Kintyre.

Most of the locks are operated by hand and you will get the chance to operate the gates and see your yacht safely through. The canal is 9 miles long and has 14 locks. You will probably remain in the canal for at least one night before departing the canal at Crinan. I think you will really enjoy the Crinan Canal Experience.

Tuesday. When you depart from The Crinan Sea Lock you will be heading Northwest towards Dorus Mor, a 600 metre channel between the Islands to the South and Craignish Point to the North. The tides can be quite strong through Dorus Mor, and your Skipper will make sure his timings will give you a smooth passage.

Wednesday. After a night at Croabh Haven Marina we will head on up the Sound of Luing for some really interesting sailing with some lovely scenery. Keep your eyes open for Porpoises on this part of your adventure.  If the tide is right and you are all for it, we’ll head north towards Tobermory. Plenty of lovely anchorages on the way if the tides are against us.

Thursday & Friday will depend on you deciding where you want to go. Our Skipper will look at the options, the weather, the tides, and the time needed to get to Oban by Friday afternoon. This will give you time to make the most of your adventure. Oban is a busy tourist destination so you will find plenty to do for your final night. In the morning it’s a quick pack up and debrief before you depart to make your way home by bus or by train.

We hope you will enjoy your adventure.
